IMBA World Summit 2012 Kickoff Meeting

Santa Fe holds 1st public planning meeting for the 6th IMBA World Summit, October 10-12:

30 enthusiastic volunteers turned out at the local REI community room on a chilly friday evening for the first meeting in preparation for the 2012 IMBA World Summit. Members of the Pedal Queens, Santa Fe Fat Tire Society, Los Alamos Tuff Riders and Bike Santa Fe were in attendance as well as representatives from the media, businesses and local government. Participants also welcomed the newly formed Los Alamos IMBA chapter.

IMBA Events Manager Terry Breheny, Bob Ward (REI) and Preston Martin (BTI) engaged the room with an open discussion about the organization of the event and pre-conference activities. Breheny solicited ideas from the group potential guest speakers, community trail projects and outreach to local businesses. Attendees were also treated to some early details about this year's Epic Ride.

Breheny cited the timing of this year's Summit as being a potential boon to attendance. Riding on the heels of Interbike, the industry, he said, should have an easy time mobilizing its demo bike fleet to Santa Fe. Participants in this year's Summit also have a number of good reasons to extend their stay to explore the area, partaking in the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and other prime-time Fall events in NM.

The Summit, Breheny said, could serve as the catalyst for Santa Fe's transformation into a true cycling destination. This comment was echoed by several others in the room during the evening. Santa Fe, judging by reactions of those in attendance, seems primed to embrace this event and its potential impact on the local community.

BTI Brings Out The Big Guns for New Advocacy Initiative

(Las Vegas,NV) Bicycle Technologies International launched a new fundraising program this week modeled after one that supports the National Rifle Association.

The program, called BTI's Advocacy RoundUp, allows BTI customers to round up their order subtotals to the nearest whole dollar or choose a set amount of $1, $2 or $3 to contribute to a group of bicycle advocacy organizations. The money will be collected throughout the year and dispersed to Bikes Belong, IMBA, League of American Bicyclists, World Bicycle Relief and the Alliance for Biking & Walking.

BTI customers can save their rounding-up choice as the default for future orders or they can change the contribution level at any time.

Wright is encouraging other bicycle companies and retailers to start their own RoundUp programs and encourage their customers to donate to the nearest wholes dollar on all purchases.

The gun industry program, called NRA Round-Up, works similarly. Hundreds of storefront gun dealers participate using either collection devices on their counters or through register software.

"Launched in 1992 by Midway USA, the firearms industry has amassed over $8 million through their round-up program that goes into an endowment fund for the NRA that only spends the interest each year supporting Second Amendment rights," Wright said. "I figured if the firearms industry can raise that kind of money for the NRA, we have an equal if not even greater opportunity within the bicycle industry."

BTI, which already contributes 4 percent of its net profits to bicycle advocacy efforts, will not trademark the program, and it is encouraging other B2B and B2C companies in the bicycle industry to adopt it into their own organizations.

"If pursued through these channels, we can make a marked difference in how we raise and contribute funds to promote cycling by making it a part of our everyday purchases," Wright said.

BTI is highlighting the new program at Booth 4073, on its website and in its marketing materials.

"Once we have some traceable value to the contribution, we will have a thermometer section of the site to show progress. Dealers will also be able to track their individual contributions in their account management on our B2B site, and at the end of the year we will post a list of contributors," Wright said.

Shimano's New Cyclocross Group

Shimano is offering two levels: CX 70 and CX 50. The CX 70 group will be available for aftermarket sale in August. The CX 50 group, a lower price-point option, won’t be ready until next year, Kempe said. The full CX 70 group’s retail price is $465.

Suppliers got a look at prototypes last February, but most 2012 cyclocross bikes now in stock or on the water won’t have the CX 70 components. Raleigh, which has upped its ‘cross line for 2012 from two to eight models, will spec the new components later in the season, said Chris Speyer, Raleigh’s vice president for products and marketing.

A key design and engineering move by Shimano was the new cantilever brakes and the smooth compatibility they offer 7900 and 7970 Dura-Ace shifting levers. The brakes are also compatible with Ultegra’s 6700 levers, and the 105 group’s 5700 levers.

While the brakes will work with earlier model levers, it’s not as smooth. “They’ll work but they won’t feel as good,” said Kempe, noting that the cable-pull ratios are different.

But among the new components, it’s the cantilever brakes that grab your attention. The detailing is superb and the hourglass-shaped span between the brake pads and levers is eye-catching. The smooth shape should help shed mud, Kempe said.

Shimano’s new crankset also offers ‘cross friendly 46/36 chainrings, a configuration popular with racers but up until now not part of the Shimano line. “That’s pretty much the sweet spot,” Kempe said. Racers using Shimano cranks and chainrings had to make do with a 46/39 setup.

The CX 70 group’s crankarms are similar to Ultegra’s hollow-core design while the CX 50 crankarms are solid throughout. The CX 70 front derailleur is also new and will deliver lightening fast shifts with the new 46/36 chainrings. The front derailleur is available in two band widths plus a bolt-on version for braze-ons.

Kempe said Shimano’s decision to move aggressively into the cyclocross market was driven by the sport’s increasing popularity, particularly in the rainy Northwest. Cross Crusade, an eight-race series in Portland, Oregon, attracts up to 1,500 racers per event. “It’s crazy to go and watch that. Right now there are more Cat 4s at a race than elite riders,” he said of the indication that the sport is growing. -Bicycle retailer

How does it stack up? Since the basis for this lubricating wax is water (which evaporates slower than solvents) the wax penetrates more deeply into the cavities of the chain.

Squirt also stays cleaner. The directions for application recommend that you do not degrease, just dry brush and chip off excess flakes on the cassette and chain rings with a toothpick.

Because you do not degrease there is a good build up of wax in the cavities of the chain and consequently it repels water and mud and works very well in wet weather conditions.

SQUIRT is not only for mountain bikes. It works equally well on road bikes and excels in cyclocross conditions.

Bicycle Retailer: BTI Grows Factory Service Capabilities

BTI is now accepting warranty service orders for Cane Creek Double Barrel shocks and DT-Swiss Tricon wheels.

The Santa Fe, New Mexico distributor has a factory service center that has long supported Cane Creek shocks and DT-Swiss products, but its staff recently completed new training to service the latest products from these brands.

The training included two days of off-site training for Cane Creek Double Barrel shocks and three days of training with DT-Swiss that included teardown of its complete fork lineup and Tricon wheel service. BTI can now handle service and warranty on DT-Swiss’ entire fork and wheel lines.

BTI also invested in specific Double Barrel tools and a nitrogen tank to restore Cane Creek shocks to their factory settings.

BTI’s factory service center currently services forks and shocks from RockShox, Marzocchi, Manitou, Maverick, White Brothers, DT-Swiss, Magura and Cane Creek. It also does brake repair for Avid, Magura, Hayes, Hope Formula and Shimano; wheel repair and service for DT-Swiss and Fulcrum; and bearing installation for Enduro bearings.

BTI is an authorized warranty center for RockShox, Avid, Truvativ, SRAM, DT-Swiss, Fulcrum and Cane Creek.

San Francisco was the place to be this weekend, Stan Pun with Soma Fabrications writes:

"Red Bull Ride + Style brought 50 of the most noted track riders and fixed gear freestyle riders from around the world to San Francisco to compete in one of the high profile fixed gear events in recent mind.

Our rider Jason Clary (rides a Pake French 75 and Soma Everwear tires) cleaned house in the Red Bull Ride-Style track race, eliminating his the competition in four heats. His confidence was crazy. He even wheelied his Pake French 75 a good 30 yards in one of his earlier races. Will be posting pictures to both the Soma and Pake blog soon and doing a short video, too. Hopefully that will get finished by Wednesday.

From steady rollin:

The competition was fierce on the narrow track, with riders elbowing each other for position, and multiple riders crashing into the guard rails. In the end, there was a final showdown between two Bay Area riders that weren’t even supposed to compete. Jason Clary and Kell McKenzie were both alternates, who were only asked to fill in for dropouts the day before the event. The two friends, who ride together often, put friendship aside for the final race and Clary was able to edge out McKenzie for the win.

“I’ve been a bike messenger for years,” said Jason Clary. “And this was a super technical course that really catered to how we ride – weaving in and out of traffic, accelerating quickly, and getting very close to obstacles. I’m really excited that I even got to participate, and winning is amazing.”

Tour of the Gila

The 25th annual Tour de Gila is underway in in sunny southen New Mexico and the competition is steaming. A five day five stage race taking riders through a variety of different events (Stage 1- Magollon road race, stage 2- inner lop road race, stage 3- time trials, stage 4- downtown criterium, stage five- Gila monster road race). In addition to the race there will also be an expo on the 30th with live views of the race.

National Bike Summit 2011: Congressional Bike Ride

This year's National Bike Summit's Congressional Bike Ride had its largest turnout to date, and was held in honor of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), a cyclist and member of the Congressional Bike Caucus. Check out this neat video commemorating the ride and some of the advocates at the Bike Summit. Women's (Bicycle) History Month

It's March! which means that Spring is nearly here... and it's Women's History Month! The Women's Movement gained seriously mobility with the introduction of the bicycle in the 1890's. The bicycle offered women a mode of transportation, without the aid of men, and access to freedom and independence. It also caused a stir in the strict Victorian fashion world. Understandably, corsets and long bustled skirts are not the best attire for fun on two wheels. So women began exchanging their frilly frocks for more practical pieces. Much to the disdain of high class society and pusillanimous pinheads everywhere, bloomers were born and women could ride even more freely.

"I think [the bicycle] has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world," feminist pioneer Susan B. Anthony declared in 1896. "It gives a woman a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. The moment she takes her seat she knows she can't get into harm unless she gets off her bicycle, and away she goes, the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood."

By the bye, I think it's a bit strange and somehow fitting that Women's History Month coincides with March Mustache Madness. Women around the world will celebrate their legacy of achievements and accomplishments, while the men will have a competition to grow out their facial hair. Go figure.

Helmet (re)Use

A surprising number of cyclists are not aware that bicycle helmets have a shelf life of 3-5 years on average. Replacing your helmet at suggested intervals is vital to keep your skull safe in an accident. Over-exposure to the sun and dropping the helmet on hard surfaces are fine reasons to replace your helmet even more frequently. Helmets are one time use, so if you and your helmet are involved in a crash, you should immediately replace the damaged helmet, even if it appears to be unscathed. My trusty purple helmet served me well for over four years and in ten countries, but I decided that the new year was a perfect opportunity to invest in a sexy new brain bucket. I chose the Fox Racing Flux in pink and green for its compact design and vibrant graphics. But now I am left with an extra helmet. By donating the used helmet to a thrift store, you are potentially endangering someone's life, as a sub-par, comprised helmet will not offer the protection of a new helmet. Livestrong offers some solid advice on Helmet Disposal and how to recycle the plastic components.

There are also endless opportunities for reusing the helmet in creative ways. One suggestion I came across was to turn your old helmet into a hanging planter. Basically, you invert the helmet, fill it with soil and plants (or seedlings or seeds) and hang it from the chin strap in a sunny area. The ventilation holes will work well to help drain excess water from the soil. I've decided to hang on to my expired helmet and re:purpose it as an extravagant headpiece for a future costume. Burning Man, perhaps? Only time will tell...

I don't know about you, but like most people I find a morning commute this time of the year to be a pretty brisk wake up call. For those that need an extra dose of go-juice to get the afterburners fired up, there's the new Topeak Modula Java Cage. The Java Cage is a one-size-fits-all cradle that works with Starbuck's style spill-proof mugs. There are two methods of adjustment; the cage length can be set to fit either 12oz or 16oz tumblers, and a knob on the bottom allows you to dial in the specific diameter. Adventure Cycling Association recently announced that its next long-distance cycling route will be "The Mother Road" aka historic Route 66. The famous route traversed Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, connecting major cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, and Los Angeles. The tour will use roads appropriate for cyclists and, when possible, on sections of the historic highway. Adventure Cycling hopes to complete mapping the bicycling Route 66 over the next 4+ years. This is exciting news for bicycle tourism in Santa Fe and other New Mexican towns.

La Route Verte

La Route Verte in Quebec Province, Canada is a 2,485 mile signed bicycle route that opened in August 2007 after 12 years of planning, design and construction. It covers a significant part of Canada's largest and only French speaking Province. It includes bike paths, shoulders of roads, small lightly traveled roads and is well marked. There are many hotels along the way that have welcoming signs for cyclists. La Route Verte is a wonderful way for the bicycle tourist to explore this vast and gorgeous land.

Mach Schnell Folding Goggles

You never know what kind of treasure you're likely to unearth at an army surplus store. Take, for instance, these foldable goggles. Originally developed during WWII as lightweight, foldable eye protection for desert campaigns - a friend of Portland Design Works picked up a pair on the cheap and started wearing them around for cycling and snowboarding. Starting this morning, web users who visit bti-usa.com will be presented with the option at log-in to say 'no thanks' to receiving the company's annual catalog. This is a big step and a challenging one for BTI as it has long been company's main sales tool to the industry.

The BTI catalog is a behemoth, at 1000 plus pages and growing it serves as a touchstone for dealers and employees. However, it also presents a bit of a conundrum for a bicycle-based business that wants to be environmentally friendly.

BTI has taken steps in recent years to mitigate the catalog's footprint by moving to recycled paper stocks, using soy inks and by following Forest Stewardship approved print practices. But ultimately, the "greenest" step we can make is to reduce our total consumption of printed paper supplies.

Taking the long view, we expect that this is an option that some shops will embrace right away, others a few seasons down the road. And why not? BTI-USA.com offers loads of important time-saving advantages over the the printed catalog:

Bike-O-Ween Celebration

On Saturday October 23 from 2-8pm @ the Railyard Plaza (adjacent to 2nd Street Brewery - Railyard), Bike Santa Fe will host a "Bike-O-Ween Celebration", our first annual fundraiser. This will be a fun, informative day for families and cyclists. We see this as an opportunity to unite the Santa Fe cycling community, clubs and organizations. Our intention is that this event will have something for everyone. We hope you will join us in celebrating cycling.

From 2pm-4pm, Bike Santa Fe will host bicycle safety drills, helmet fittings, bike education and information for both children and adults.

At 4pm, Mayor Coss, Councilor Patti Bushee and Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico President, Diane Albert, will address the audience. Followed by a presentation from the Metropolitan Planning Organization covering ongoing bicycle-related projects and anticipated improvements expected in the near future.

At 5pm, Mellow Velo is hosting a Bicycle Costume Contest!
Prizes for Best Adult, Best Kid, Scariest, Funniest and Best Bike Costume!

At 6:30pm, the winning raffle ticket for the Giant Via City Bike will be drawn.

Throughout the day, REI is offering free bike repair.

Second Street Brewery will be hosting a Bike-O-ween Beer Garden with discounts on beer.

Entertainment will be provided by a variety of talented local musicians -
Ben Wright, Melanie Moore, Kin Keezy, Gargamel, plus folk music and more! Dress up and roll on down for an afternoon of fun!

Just in time for winter indoor riding, BTI welcomes Power Fluid trainers from Elite. Available in several different styles and with price points to suit even the most discriminating penny pincher - these are a solid value. And I do mean solid - we unboxed a couple for a closer look upon arrival and found them to be well constructed.

Standouts of the group include the Ritmo (shown above), which includes "dancing" feet designed to simulate the real feel of outdoor riding and Elite's Parabolic Roller that has curved shoulders to prevent a rider from accidentally drifting off the sides of the unit during training.

This Fork Will Make You Want to Throw Away Your Chopsticks

Earlier this week BTI became the first US distributor to receive stock of Ritchey's new Pro-Carbon 29er rigid fork. Lightweight carbon with an aluminum crown and steerer, the Pro-Carbon features full carbon fiber legs and dropouts. And the weight? The Pro-Carbon tips the scales at a svelte 810 grams - less than half the weight of a comparable carbon full suspension fork.

The League of American Bicyclists announced 63 new Bicycle Friendly Businesses on Sept 23. BTI received Gold level status - one of just 4 new Gold awards this season. BTI is proud to become the second Bicycle Friendly Business in NM and the first to acheive the Gold level for its efforts to support local, state, national and international bicycle advocacy initiatives.
